Director and Senior Counsel, Labor and Employment

Responsible for assisting the Sr. Vice President of Legal in the management and handling of all labor and employment and wage and hour related matters in the Company. This position is responsible for: providing day-to-day legal advice and counseling in labor and employment law matters; supporting wage and hour and human resources compliance (HRC) and business initiatives; conducting or managing investigations; preparing responses to administrative charges and inquiries; managing outside counsel in employment litigation claims, conducting research and training; developing and implementing workplace policies in collaboration with other Company departments; and, developing and delivering preventive law presentations. The position entails significant interaction with in-house business organizations, franchisees, government agencies and other external parties. The position requires collaboration with and management of outside counsel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides day-to-day proactive labor and employment law advice, counsel and guidance to HRC and Company management on a variety of subjects, including protected leaves and accommodations, benefits and wage and hour requirements
  • Develop, draft, and implement a variety of workplace policies and employee training in collaboration with HRC and other functions as appropriate
  • Ensures compliance with labor and employment laws and regulations, including development, implementation, interpretation, and guidance regarding company policies and practices, and preventive law training
  • Manages and represents the Company in responding to federal and state administrative/regulatory agency charges
  • Manages outside counsel in litigated labor, wage and hour and employment law claims
  • Respond to franchisee inquiries regarding wage and hour and employment practices issues
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school
  • Active license to practice law in the state of Oklahoma
  • 3-5 years of relevant substantive legal experience in a law firm or corporate legal department

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of labor and employment and wage and hour laws and related regulations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with leadership, other legal department members, internal clients, franchisees, and third parties in writing, verbally, and in presentation format
  • Must possess effective negotiation skills and exercise sound legal judgment
  • Ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment working within time constraints
  • Ability to independently manage legal matters and projects ranging from basic to complex
